Thank You for Another Successful Year!
The 19th annual Showcase, held Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Union South, again provided an opportunity for colleagues from across the UW-Madison campus to connect with each other, share best practices, and learn from each other’s successes. This year’s event featured 65 poster exhibits, 19 poster flash talks, four breakout sessions, and a special keynote presentation by Mark Guthier, Director of the Wisconsin Union. Over 740 people registered for the event. Thank you to all who attended or participated in the event!
Synopsis of the Morning’s Activities
Poster Session: 8:00-11:00 a.m.
Participants learned about creative and exciting projects completed on campus in the past year and networked with the people who made them happen.
Here is just a sampling of the many successes that were on display this year:
- Improving campus climate through reading groups
- Student digital ecosystem: connecting systems to better support student success
- Finding shared research resources
- Video interviewing for graduate school admissions
- Creating a tablet-based maintenance log system
- Connecting classrooms: how the School of Social Work connects with students in the Eau Claire area
- Common Support Portal and delivering efficient request management across shared services
Breakout Sessions: 8:15 & 10:15 a.m.
Featured presenters offered insights and tools that participants can leverage in their own work to help their units with process and program improvement efforts. This year’s breakout session topics were Collaborative by Design: Tech Tools and Tips for Working Well with Others; The Transformative Design Approach to Problem Solving; Quick Process Improvement Methods; and Planning and Leading Effective Meetings.

Poster Flash Talks: 9:15-10:00 a.m.
Attendees were able to relax in a comfortable seat as 19 exhibitors provided quick 2-minute synopses of their projects and posters.
Keynote Speaker: 11:15 a.m-12:15 p.m.
Director, Wisconsin Union
Mark Guthier delivered his keynote presentation, "From Vision to Reality: The Transformation of the Wisconsin Union," to an attentive audience in the Union South Marquee Theater at 11:15 a.m., to conclude the morning's activities. In it, he shared highlights and lessons learned from the journey to restore the historic Memorial Union and re-imagine Union South—a 10-year endeavor that was successfully completed last year and has been receiving positive reviews.
