Description:
First offered in 2005, the two-day Project Management Symposium provides an opportunity to:
- Work with and learn from campus project managers.
- Practice using a project management framework that includes tools and templates.
- Learn best practices in initiating, planning, scheduling, executing, controlling, managing, and closing a project.
- Work in teams to apply course concepts using a simulated project management exercise.
- Obtain insights, tips, and techniques for managing projects.
This course has been designed for campus project managers who are (or will soon be) responsible for small- to medium-sized projects.

2018 Project Management Symposium Agenda
Topics and activities:
- Build understanding of the project management framework, the project pipeline, and key terms and concepts.
- Practice interviewing and other techniques to gather project information.
- Learn how to prepare for project kickoff meetings and how to create project charters and communication plans.
- Practice identifying/assigning work tasks and estimating work.
- Practice developing a project schedule with milestones.
Topics and activities:
- Learn how to create and maintain a risk mitigation plan.
- Explore techniques for monitoring project progress, milestones, and costs.
- Learn techniques for change management and controlling scope, cost, and schedule.
- Explore personal triggers and techniques for managing yourself.
- Learn the value of closeout reports and documenting lessons learned/best practices.
- Learn about portfolio management.
- Develop a personal action plan and explore other project management resources.
